विजया के घर 5 जुलाई 1995 में पैदा हुई। रमण भी वालीबाल खेल में उल्लेखनीय कार्य हेतु वर्ष-2000 में भारत सरकार का प्रतिष्ठित अर्जुन पुरस्कार प्राप्त कर चुके हैं। उनके माता-पिता पेशेवर वॉलीबॉल खिलाड़ी थे, किन्तु सिंधु ने 2001 के ऑल इंग्लैंड ओपन बैडमिंटन चैंपियन बने पुलेला गोपीचंद से प्रभावित होकर बैडमिंटन को अपना करियर चुना और महज आठ साल की उम्र से बैडमिंटन खेलना शुरू कर दिया। सिंधु ने सबसे पहले सिकंदराबाद में इंडियन रेलवे सिग्नल इंजीनियरिंग और दूर संचार के बैडमिंटन कोर्ट में महबूब अली के मार्गदर्शन में बैडमिंटन की बुनियादी बातों को सीखा। इसके बाद वे पुलेला गोपीचंद के गोपीचंद बैडमिंटन अकादमी में शामिल हो गई। आगे चलकर वे मेहदीपट्टनम से इंटरमीडिएट की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की हैं।[3], अंतरराष्ट्रीय सर्किट में, सिंधु कोलंबो में आयोजित 2009 सब जूनियर एशियाई बैडमिंटन चैंपियनशिप में कांस्य पदक विजेता रही हैं।[4] उसके बाद उन्होने वर्ष-2010 में ईरान फज्र इंटरनेशनल बैडमिंटन चैलेंज के एकल वर्ग में रजत पदक जीता।[5] वे इसी वर्ष मेक्सिको में आयोजित जूनियर विश्व बैडमिंटन चैंपियनशिप के क्वार्टर फाइनल तक पहुंची।[6] 2010 के थॉमस और उबर कप के दौरान वे भारत की राष्ट्रीय टीम की सदस्य रही।, 14 जून 2012 को, सिंधु इंडोनेशिया ओपन में जर्मनी के जुलियन शेंक से 21-14, 21-14 से हार गईं।[7] 7 जुलाई 2012 को वे एशिया यूथ अंडर-19 चैम्पियनशिप के फाइनल में उन्होने जापानी खिलाड़ी नोजोमी ओकुहरा को 18-21, 21-17, 22-20 से हराया।[8] उन्होने 2012 में चीन ओपन (बैडमिंटन) सुपर सीरीज टूर्नामेंट में लंदन ओलंपिक 2012 के स्वर्ण पदक विजेता चीन के ली जुएराऊ को 9-21, 21-16 से हराकर सेमी फाइनल में प्रवेश किया। वे चीन के ग्वांग्झू में आयोजित 2013 के विश्व बैडमिंटन चैंपियनशिप में एकल पदक जीतने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी है। इसमें उन्होने ऐतिहासिक कांस्य पदक हासिल किया था।[9] भारत की उभरती हुई इस बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी ने अपना शानदार प्रदर्शन जारी रखते हुए 1 दिसम्बर 2013 को कनाडा की मिशेल ली को हराकर मकाउ ओपन ग्रां प्री गोल्ड का महिला सिंगल्स खिताब जीता है। शीर्ष वरीयता प्राप्त 18 वर्षीय सिंधु ने सिर्फ 37 मिनट चले खिताबी मुकाबले में मिशेल को सीधे गेम में 21-15, 21-15 से हराकर अपना दूसरा ग्रां प्री गोल्ड खिताब जीता। उन्होंने इससे पहले मई में मलेशिया ओपनजीता था। सिंधु ने शुरुआत से ही दबदबा बनाया और कनाडा की सातवीं वरीय खिलाड़ी को कोई मौका नहीं दिया।[10]
